Mina Massaro-Giordano


Dr Mina Massaro-Giordano is an internationally known board certified Ophthalmologist and Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Scheie Eye Institute. She attended Temple Medical School and graduated in the top 5% of her class. She completed her residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and was appointed Chief Resident in her final year. She then joined the faculty and established the Penn Dry Eye and Ocular Surface center where she cares for a myriad of patients with Ocular Surface Disease. In particular, patients with Sjogren’s Disease, Graft vs Host Disease and Corneal Neuropathic pain. This center is the only of its kind in the region and offers multidisciplinary patient care involving collaboration with specialists in various fields including rheumatology, dermatology, allergy, neurology, endocrinology and oculoplastics. The center utilizes State-of- the- Art diagnostic technology and treatment options. Dr Massaro has been a Principle Investigator in many national and international clinical trials dealing with surface disease. She has also participated in basic science research to elucidate the role of specific proteins and hormones involved in corneal homeostasis. Dr Massaro also actively collaborates with members of the department of engineering to devise novel drug delivery methods and in the construction of an artificial cornea/lid model. She also contributed in developing a standardized photography protocol for imaging of diseases that affect the eyelids and the ocular surface. Dr Massaro was elected by her peers to the Academy of Master Clinicians which is the highest clinical honor for a Penn Medicine physician. Dr Massaro presents and teaches at numerous courses and international meetings. She has authored several peer-reviewed articles dealing with ocular epithelial surface changes and most recently played a pivotal role in the FDA approval of Nerve Growth Factor eye drops used to treat Neurotrophic Keratitis.
